Fights between Afars and Issa kill people

ESAT News
April 17, 2013
An armed attack by the Issa ethnic community on Afar people in Gewane and Buliwelayeto Woredas of Afar Region four days ago has killed few people.  Two have been taken to Nazret Hospital for special treatment. In a similar attack before two days ago, one Afari was killed while seven were injured.
After the incumbent came to power, Issa people had applied for a special administrative Woreda which was strongly opposed by Afar. In a related report, over 15,000 Tigreans living in Zone 2 of Afar Region, have once again applied for a special administrative Woreda. Many Afar people are opposing the request fearing that the permission of special administrative Worda for one would mean the other would also get the same status. The Afar people say that Tigray Region is trying to annex Afar Region by using Tigreans living in Afar as a pretext.
Our efforts to speak to Ethiopian government officials on the issue were unproductive.
